Context

On 8 September 2023 a magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck Al Haouz province, south of Marrakesh, killing nearly 3,000 people and damaging more than 500 schools across the High Atlas. Two years on, many of those schools are still operating from prefabricated cabins and tents while permanent reconstruction works through ministry timelines.

Education in the Atlas was already fragile before the earthquake. Children in many villages speak Tamazight at home and encounter classroom instruction in Modern Standard Arabic — a gap that widens through the early grades. Add altitude, snow, distance to the nearest collège, and the result is a high drop-out rate, especially among girls.

The Foundation funds local organisations doing the patient work of keeping children in school through the rebuild — bilingual literacy support, after-school programmes, transport, and learning materials.
